Records, 1851-1853, 1881.

Consists of material pertaining to the Heywood Bros. & Co. of rattan furniture fame. Five of the twelve documents pertain to the shipping of chairs by Levi Heywood. A letter from Dr. George Derby discusses the making of a chair for a music hall. Two bills made out to C. Heywood document his purchase of food and dry-goods. Another item notes that Walter Heywood was chosen as chairman of the American Rattan Company, while Levi was chosen to be secretary. Also included are three plates prepared in 1881 for a Heywood Bros. & Co. trade catalog. The proofs were done by the Lythotype Printing Co., 114 Nassau St., New York. Such objects as carriages, rocking chairs, high chairs, straight back chairs, swivel chairs, captain's chairs, and stools are depicted. A few of the chairs shown had movable parts, allowing them to be used as carriages or tables as well.

The Heywood brothers (Walter, Levi, and Benjamin) began their business in Gardner, Ma. with Walter making chairs and Levi and Benjamin selling them at a country store. In 1831, Levi moved to Boston, Ma. to open a store to sell chairs. In the 1830s, the brothers formalized their partnership under the direction of Levi.
